How is this calculated?
This tool uses Naismith’s Rule: 1 hour for every 5 km of distance, plus 30 minutes for every 300 m climbed, plus 10 minutes for every 300 m descended. A terrain multiplier is applied (road 1.0, trail 1.15, rough 1.35, snow 1.5), then your planned rest breaks are added.
time = (distance/speed + climb/300×30min + descent/300×10min) × terrain + rest
Sources: Naismith (1892), modern walking-time literature. Estimates only — real conditions vary with fitness, weather and load.
Trail tip
Add 20–30% to any estimate for a loaded pack, hot weather or a group with mixed fitness. When in doubt, plan to finish 1 hour before dark.
